Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by the time their first tooth grows in, or by their first birthday—whichever occurs first. These initial appointments will help acclimate them to our dentistry team and dental office, and as they get older, they’ll turn into bi-annual checkups and cleanings. We’ll capture X-rays of their mouth, conduct a thorough visual examination of their teeth, and thoroughly clean and polish their teeth to prevent common oral health problems from developing throughout the year. We also take the time to educate children on good oral hygiene practices.
Special Needs Children’s Dentistry
All children deserve to have comfortable visits to the dentist, which is why we’re happy to be an accessible space for children with special needs. If your little one has cognitive, physical, or behavioral disabilities, just let us know how we can help them feel at home whenever they arrive.
Dental Sealants
Cavities are one of the most common oral health problems that children face because they’re still learning how to properly care for their pearly whites. As an added protective measure against decay, we offer clear dental sealants that we brush across their molars and harden to keep food debris and plaque from accumulating in the crevices. This makes brushing easier and more effective, reducing their risk of developing cavities.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is an essential mineral to the formation of strong and healthy teeth. Without enough of it, their enamel (the protective, outermost layer of their teeth) may not be as strong, increasing their chances of dental caries. If we notice that your child may not be receiving enough fluoride, we may suggest rubbing a fluoridated varnish over their teeth after their bi-annual checkup and cleaning to fortify and protect them.
Tooth-Colored Fillings
In the past, dentists would use a combination of metals, called amalgam, to fill children’s cavities. Not only could this result in increased dental sensitivity, but it could also impact the confidence of children because the restoration was immediately noticeable whenever they opened their mouths. Today, we utilize a biocompatible material called composite resin for fillings. It’s able to fuse with the dental enamel for a tight preventive seal and reduced sensitivity, and because it blends in with the rest of their teeth, children can speak and laugh without having to be self-conscious of others noticing their restoration.
Pulp Therapy
If a cavity goes untreated or a tooth becomes damaged, and bacteria gains access to the inner chamber of the tooth, we may recommend pulp therapy. Dr. Q will remove the infected pulp and restore the tooth’s structure with a tooth-colored material before topping it off with a customized dental crown. The goal of this procedure is to preserve their primary tooth to keep it from falling out too early.
Sedation Dentistry for Kids
Dr. Q has years of experience providing children’s dental sedation. In fact, he has completed over 10,000 pediatric sedation cases to help children feel comfortable while they’re in the treatment chair. As a trusted expert, he’s happy to discuss this option with parents who have children who are afraid of the dentist or may need a longer procedure.
